Planning and Organisation of a Blog

Posted on 09 May 2008

Hello readers,

I know I have spoken about planning before, but I think it was not in enough detail, so I am posting this one as well. I would like to note that I did not write this post (Though I have added more to it), I have been very busy so I paid for the post, however I shall not make a habit of this!

Planning and Organisation of a Blog

When you are starting a brand new blog it is important not to dive right in without some thorough planning.

You do not need to go overboard with the planning of your new blog, but the following points should be considered:

  • Topic of the blog
  • How often you will post
  • Whether you will have advertisements on the blog
  • Whether you will collect visitors email addresses
  • A list of keywords that you will base your blog articles on

If you write notes about the above points before beginning your new blog, you will have a better idea of what you wish to achieve.

It is very important to choose which niche the blog is about very early on, as it is easy to get sidetracked and broaden it out as I have had to do here. I would recommend choosing a very small niche or even starting your own, because if it is one that will interest readers but is fairly unique then there is a high chance it shall be successful.

Organizing a blog starts after you have the blog online. You need to consider the following:

  • The theme or design of the blog (available for free online or you can buy a custom theme)
  • Which plugins you will use
  • Whether the blog will be static (using Pages) or chronological (using Posts), or both
  • How you organize the structure of your content

If your blog is going to be based on a large niche topic, consider breaking it up into sub-topics. You can then organize the articles within the sub-topics using Categories. Blog categories allow your visitors to easily navigate articles within the sub-topics they are interested in.

Plugins will add considerable features to your blog. At the very least consider an SEO plugin, an anti-spam plugin and a Sitemaps plugin.

Planning and organizing a blog is tedious work but it makes the process of starting a new blog easy and enjoyable.

I hope you have learned from this post.

The Daily Special - 08/05/08

Posted on 08 May 2008

Hello everyone,

Today I have decided to talk about Infected by Bugs, an amazing blog by Shannon Lilly.  His blog is about making money online, and he posts wonderful posts almost everyday!

When I first visited Infected by Bugs, I was impressed! The graphics are extremely aesthetically pleasing and the actual content was just as impressive. In fact, I subscribed to his RSS on the first day that I saw the site.

I think that his mascot is so impressive that it gives character to the whole blog. I think this was well worth the amount of money it must have costed to be made.

I hope you visit this blog as it really is worth a visit,

Shane Hudson

You need a product before a name

Posted on 06 May 2008

Hello readers,

You all know how much I like quotes. Today I was talking to a close friend who has helped me through almost everything in the online world that i have attempted so far. He was telling me about his new business but when I asked th name of it he said:

“You need a product before a name” – John Diaz

As soon as he said it, I decided I had to write a post about it. This quote is very powerful to me, and I think it is because I never follow it. Every time I have ever tried to do something, I have always worked out the name, concept and design first then going straight in without actually making the product first!

It is also quite amazing how people “grow up” as such. Ever since I met John he was always like I am, always willing to get into something and fail. But now it seems he has changed, and I think that is what is goig to make him the success that we are both after.

I first met John many years ago on a game called Runescape, he helped me learn much more and soon we started to develop websites and forums. None of these lasted very long at all, just because we tried to make it quickly and easily instead of planning and making first. I just asked him to name every project we tried and failed.. the list is terrifying!

  1. RS Anarchy, a forum about Runescape
  2. Dead Poet, a site dedicated to John’s poems
  3. D-Zines, a site for myself and another friend called Beno to freelance from

And the list goes on! Hopefully we are both out of this phase of failing and shall have many successes in the near future!

Whenever I decide to start a new project I am going to remember this quote and put it to good use. So I hope you all learn from this simple quote, as I know I have!

Thank you,

Shane Hudson
